A global movement is growing. From Egypt to Spain, from Greece to the United States, hundreds of thousands of everyday people are occupying. Occupy Sydney began on 15 October, with hundreds of people reclaiming Martin Place. Flanked by the imposing towers of the financial and political elites, where a handful of people make decisions which affect the whole society, a new democratic space was established.

Occupy Sydney created a non-hierarchical forum for open debate, where people began to have discussions and make decisions about things which affect our lives and communities. The occupy movement democratises the dominated and elitist spaces in our cities. Even if it is partly symbolic, it is immensely dangerous to the status quo. And although the structures of participation are in their early stages, this is still an extremely significant project - a playground of anarchism and democracy.

For the first time in years, the occupy movement has legitimised an anti-capitalist discourse - usually submerged in society and stifled by the media.

At Occupy Sydney, people developed relationships based on mutual respect, and voiced our shared outrage at the greed and illegitimate power of the 1% who rule us. People from diverse walks of life visited the occupation, painted signs, donated food and participated. Between 50 and 100 people stayed overnight for 8 nights.

In the early hours of Sunday 23 October, the police forcefully evicted Occupy Sydney from Martin Place. It was a clear reminder that State repression goes hand in hand with capitalism. Police took action to recapture the space for elites - symbolically and physically.

But within hours, an emergency meeting was organised, attended by over 200 people. And we made the decision to re-occupy. Occupy Sydney continues.

Who are we? We are the workers; we are the indebted; we are the immigrants and the indigenous; we are the homeless; we are the students; we are the unemployed; we are the under represented people of the world. We are the 99%.

And we invite you to join us.

At 12 midday on Saturday 5 November we will meet at meet at Town Hall and march to re-occupy. The Occupation is not over. It has only just begun.

long time no post!

food not bombs is ticking along with our fortnightly servings in newtown. we are always looking for more people to get involved in all aspects. we'd love more donations, suggestions and projects! check out www.sydnfb.tk to get involved in discussions.

october 18th - regular serving

people generally go adventuring on friday evenings to collect food for the serving. we then cook in the jura bookshop kitchen from 1pm on the saturday, with our serving taking place at the martin luther king mural in newtown approximately 4.30pm.

october 31st - reclaim the night march

a march highlighting the need for further community action combating violence against women. come and help make our streets safe again! the march is autonomous (women identifiers only) but men are encouraged to support by walking behind the march.

not really a food not bombs event...

this is going to be a super fun fundraiser for a collective from davao city in the pilippines who also do food not bombs! so not stretching it too far!

please come and give what you can.

Kitchen cleaned

Yesterday we cleaned up the Jura kitchen.

We threw out everything that smelt and looked wrong, moved everything out of the room and cleaned every surface.

Then put everything back on the shelves and gave everything a label, even the microwave and the big can of dolmades that forever watches over the Jura kitchen.

We hope that all volunteers can find what they need and can keep the space tidy now.

Also, if anyone needs some tea cups, a dish drying rack or some stuff that we couldn't work out what they were, there's a free pile at Jura of stuff the kitchen doesn't need.

Rain...

Today, we weren't able to serve at the usual space at the "I have a dream" mural due to the rain so instead we did our serving at Jura Books where there was also a book launch of a new book about the Zapatistas as well as a video link up with a collective in the US and a collective in Mexico.

Due to this we weren't able to post on here saying that the serving venue had changed. Sorry, to anyone who was waiting for us at the mural. We should be there again in two weeks time on September 20 if the weather is fine.

FNBs make it hot

Food Not Bombs have had a box of chilies sitting around the Jura kitchen for a while now and some would predict the only dish they will be spicing up soon is some bin juice.

This afternoon (12pm - 5pm) some of us will be hanging out at Jura Books trying to make all sorts of chili pastes, sauces and pickled chilies too.

Bring empty jars, and maybe gloves if you plan on touching your nose, eyes, etc. anytime in the week. Please don't bring any more chilies.

hi-tech high tea

this isn't strictly food not bombs BUT all money raised from hi-tech high tea will go towards funding the kitchen of the kinaiyahan unahon collective from the pilippines. they do all sorts of rad things including food not bombs in davao city!

climate camp

it ruled. if you missed it, you missed out! sydney fnb-ers did loads of chopping in the kitchen for the camp, alongside rising tide, newcastle fnb and other happy campers.

for the mass action we were part of team salad (sometimes all lentils act defiantly; sending affinity, love and defiance; supporting activists laughing at danger), providing support for people's bellies as they stood up for climate action. many activists got onto the train track to help stop coal deliveries - including our very own ash! YAY! we also had to chop TEN BOXES of oranges and apples into quarters cos the po-po thought we were gonna chuck em willy nilly at officers. ha! as if we would waste such delicious tucker on them!

mad props to our sanger station which managed to feed most of the 300 activists at the camp, and many more on the day. photos (maybe) forthcoming.

just a quick not to let y'all know what's been happening with food not bombs recently.

REGULAR SERVINGS

these have been going gang busters. we're serving every fortnight on a saturday afternoon on the corner of king and forbes streets in newtown, from 4.30pm. feel free to pop on down for some tasty chow! if you're really keen and wanna come cook with us, it's from 1pm at jura bookshop which is 440 parramatta road in petersham. we're doing one NOW / today, so the next will be in a fortnight.

CLIMATE CAMP

a whole bunch of us are heading up to newcastle in two weeks for climate camp. check out all the details here: www.climatecamp.org.au come for the whole five days, just the weekend or even for the day of action on the sunday. we'll be there making tasty vegan food, going to workshops, making props for the march, learning dances and generally having an ace time learning about how we can minimise our effect on the planet.

feel free to come along and join our neighbourhood and camp / eat / chill with us.

FUNDRAISING SHOW / ZINE FAIR / EATING PARTY

if so, food not bombs sydney is holding a MASSIVE fund raising show / zine fair / eating party at jura bookshop on sunday the 27th of july. it'll start about 2pm, with the outside stuff packing up at sundown. drop us a line if you want to bring your stuff along and have a little table. tables are free, but a small donation would nice if you sell lots of stuff.

Collective Meeting on May 3rd

On Saturday May 3rd we will be holding a collective meeting at 12pm at Jura Books (440 Parramatta Rd, Petersham).

We will be looking over the year so far, evaluating and making plans for the future. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to have been part of the group before.

After the meeting we will prepare for the regular 4pm serving on the corner of Forbes and King St, Newtown.

action against police brutality

hola!

this weekend we're doing a special solidarity action against police brutality. it's been prompted by the treatment of comrades in moscow, russia. come along to show solidarity and partake in delish food at the same time!

below is a message from russia:

Wrongful deeds of police do not surprise anyone in today's Russia. Disregard of law, violation of rights, illegal detention and searching are by now considered business as usual.

4th of April 7 peaceful young men were beaten up and illegally arrested by police in Moscow near Sokolniki subway station. These persons were not resisting arrest, as videos made by their friends and other eyewitnesses prove. The only thing they made to protest against the illegal arrests was merely forming a chain and demanding from police to abide laws.

Due to this "crime" (which unlike actions of the police, does not contradict any law), the cops started knocking the guys down, beating them with batons, kicking them, using electroschokers and handcuffs, as if people in front of them were not innocent youth but especially
dangerous criminals.

During the following hours, cops were brutally torturing the arrested guys, 3 minors included, in the Sokolniki police-station Arrested were
beaten with batons, kicked, beaten with chairs, their heads were beaten to walls and they were given electric shocks all around the body, head and groin included. While torturing, cops lavished chauvinist and racist comments. One of the tortured guys got a heart attack from electric shock, but he was not given any proper medical care.

When the parents of the persons arrested came to the station, cops told them that "nobody was even touched at the station" and all the injures were received in a street fight (which cops claimed in media they had prevented). Arrested did not got their property back, passport of one of the detained persons is still held by the police.

All hospitals which were approached by the tortured youth refused to record wounds, as required by the law, as doctors learned that wounds were result of police brutality. This in order to make it impossible for the tortured to sue police. Apparently police has such a well-established pattern of "cooperation" with the health care system. Police also started criminal investigations against the tortured, statute "Violent resistance against a police officer" is a felony with a sentence of up to 5 years in prison.

We are already aware that such practices happen in this (and many other) police stations, and not the first time. Many crimes are "solved" with such a way, as police is demanded a stable percent of solved crimes by their superiors, innocent people keep being arrested and are forced to sign testimony against themselves by torture.

In most of the cases victims are afraid to sue police, as they are afraid of them and are certain that there is no way to gain justice through the system. Officials got used to all of this for a long time ago, and they are reigning in impunity. And more there are such cases, more confident the criminals in grey uniforms feel themselves.

This Friday 11th of April in Slavyanskiy square of Moscow 7 PM there will be a big demonstration against police brutality, to support those tortured by police in Sokolniki police station and all victims of the police brutality in our city!

We ask you to support a week against police brutality from 11th to 20th of April! We ask you to make a picket of solidarity or other action for victims of the police brutality in Russia at the local Russian embassy or in any other place in your city!

Right now no-one is safe from police brutality in Russia. As the case in Sokolniky proved, whoever of us may become a victim of illegal acts from "defenders of the order".

We want, that all this was not merely ignored!
